Boutique Spotlight ~ Wrabyn
When I closed my shop in December to pursue my blog and styling business, I was asked again and again, “where am I going to shop now?” For local Annapolitans, I have found a fantastic new shop, in West Annapolis ~ Wrabyn ~ by Annapolis Fashion icon, Wendy Rabin. Wendy was one of the original owners of Sitting Pretty which opened its doors on Maryland Avenue back in 2004. Offering ladylike party attire from Kate Spade, Tory Burch & Milly, Wendy and her partner introduced upscale boutique shopping to the sophisticated women of Annapolis. She decided to pursue her passion for styling and left the shop to start her own side business. With a Communications degree from University of Richmond, she eventually became the marketing director for Annapolis based Hobo Int. Handbags. Starting a family was her main focus over the past several years and now the ‘Fashion Gods,’ as she puts it, have called her back into duty serving the ladies of Annapolis with a brand new shop all her own.
I stopped in yesterday to check out her wares and learn more about her overall brand. Wendy enthusiastically took me rack by rack through her sun lit shop and gushed about the construction and fabrication of each garment. Her best performing merchandise hands down is by Halston Heritage, a glamorous yet simplistically chic lifestyle brand that embodies the modern woman who knows style is so much more than mere trend. In fact, that is Wendy’s approach to buying; selecting pieces that are not overly avant guard or trend driven but, as she puts it, ‘fluxable’ to take you from day to night with a simple tweak in accessory. Her accessories do just that ~ transform. Statement pieces by Olivia Harris and other unique jewelry purveyors are sure to be her staple as her client understands the importance of well constructed handbags (a shipment from Botkier is due any day) and jewelry that will withstand the test of time and make a dramatic impact.
I picked up a super cute black, long sleeve tee emblazoned with a gold crown design by Feel the Piece and a taupe leather jacket by Australian designer Pol for my daughter. After my gluten, dairy, soy, corn detox I will surely be headed back in as I was coveting MIH (Made in Heaven) jeans, an LBD by Tracy Reece and a belted, dolman sleeve shift in brilliant kelly green by, you guessed it, Halston Heritage.
Her motto is “Runway to Wrabyn” as she believes that her client is not “trendy” yet is definitely “influenced by trend.” She deliberately chose West Annapolis Village because it is off the beaten path. Parking is never a problem and she can really give time and a quality experience to her clients. She is not looking for 25 clients a day, but a handful of clients she can dote on. She says her brand is all about fun and “playing dress up, looking in the mirror and having girlie moments.” You can see remnants of her Sitting pretty branding in the black & white framed signs propped up on the shelves with mantras like “when in doubt, wear red.” I believe their motto at Sitting Pretty was, “Ladies, lets dress!” and I see nothing has changed. Wendy understands we are real women with real lives and families but we want and need to look our best. Wendy personifies a ladylike approach to dressing injected with just the right amount of edge
